The Real King's Speech
P P Podcast
Posted by Martin "whoar, that Queen Mother" Kelner on Jan 22, 2011 - 2:47:44 PM
If you have not yet seen The King's Speech, do not delay.  Almost uniquely, it is as good as they say it is, thanks to brilliant performances from Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush, and Helena Bonham-Carter, who imbues you with the rather spooky feeling of actually fancying the Queen Mother (something few of us will have experienced in real life).

Historically, it glosses over some of the less pleasant aspects of the royals, although it gives Edward Vlll - the Duke of Windsor - a right kicking.  In fact, I believe the working title of the movie was Edward Vlll - What A Nazi Twat!

Anyway, click through if you want to hear the real voice of the real George Vl at his coronation in May, 1937......

....in a Phil Spector stylee, but without all the guns, and the shagging of the Ronettes and that...

Have you had enough of Last Christmas by Wham, would you rather gnaw your leg off than listen to John and Yoko's Christmas dirge again, are you fed up with local radio djs telling you how great The Pogues and Kirsty McColl's record is, do you think Jona Lewie's had enough royalites for now??

Well, here are some Christmas songs they are not playing, starting with social comment from Loudon Wainwright...

More social comment now from the late Tony Capstick.  This is what Christmas sounded like in the late 1970s

These are sad days.  First we have to announce the death of the PPP, then a former member of ELO dies in a bizarre accident involving a bale of hay, and now PPP favourite Robert Schimmel, who seemed to have conquered his cancer, dies in a road accident

Here is just a taste of what he did so well....

What a fantastic archive is now open to lucky subscribers.  Ripped at random from somewhere around PPP 85...  It's an interesting relic for archivists revealing the PPP at a relatively early stage, before it became the fully formed comic masterpiece of the later years...

Yeah, right

For the final time, the epicures' podcast of choice goes in search of gourmet food in the company of some of Britain's top restaurant critics, and Jay Rayner.  Our valedictory restaurant review sees the great Lucas Hollweg, pinch-hitting for A A Gill in search of surf and turf at Redhook in London's almost fashionable Farringdon...
